The global Comfort Keepers story began in 1998 in North America, when Kris Butler, a registered nurse working in home health care, discovered first-hand, the need for someone to assist her patients with their non-medical needs. As a nurse, she was only allowed to tend to their medical, or skilled care, needs.
Her clients often valued companionship above all else and requested small favours to improve their quality of life. Whether it was help with laundry, a ride to a doctor’s appointment, or just to spend time over a puzzle, her patients simply wished to have someone brighten their day with a few minutes of conversation, and a helping hand at home.Since 1998, the company has flourished from a dream to 700+ locations worldwide.
Comfort Keepers is available in 13 countries including the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, through independently owned and operated locations that make a difference in the lives of seniors and other adults in their community.
The Comfort Keepers franchise system includes a large, global network of caring individuals. Many location owners came to Comfort Keepers as a result of their own experiences caring for a loved one. After discovering the significant difference that in-home care, makes in the quality of a senior’s life, they wanted to be a part of a culture of care.
The Western Australia’s Company Franchise was established in July, 2006, when friends and business associates, Dr Garry Garside and Paul Fiddes, identified the growing need and changing expectations in the market, for quality, in-home care, to reflect Australia’s rapidly ageing ‘baby boom’ generation.
With ageing parents, themselves, they also wanted to create a company, that focused on flexible, immediate and highly personalised service provision and a culture that mirrored core family values and provided more lifestyle and care choices, for seniors.
Following a visit to New York to meet with the head franchise office in Osborne Park in 2005, Comfort Keepers, Perth was founded - along with the opening of the South of the River franchise and office, in December 2006.
